How to use the Steps to Miles Converter

  1. Enter your steps (or the distance, if converting the other way).
  2. Enter your height — or your measured stride length for the best accuracy.
  3. Read the distance in miles and kilometres, plus estimated calories.
  4. Optional: measure a walk, count every step and apply your measured step length.

How many steps are in a mile?

For most adults, about 2,000–2,500 walking steps make a mile (1,250–1,550 per kilometre). Taller people take longer strides and need fewer steps; running strides are longer still, around 1,400–1,800 steps per mile. 10,000 steps is roughly 4–5 miles (6.5–8 km).

How stride length is estimated

Without a measured stride, the calculator uses the common estimate of height × 0.413 for women and height × 0.415 for men (walking). Running stride is estimated as about 1.6× walking stride. To measure yours: walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10.

Calories from steps

Calories are estimated with MET values — about 3.0 for normal walking, 4.3 for brisk walking and 9.0 for running — multiplied by your weight and the time it takes to cover the distance. Treat it as an estimate: fitness trackers and treadmills use similar formulas.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4.7 miles (7.6 km) for someone 170 cm tall with an average stride.
How many steps a day should I take?
Health benefits start well below 10,000 steps: studies link 7,000–8,000 steps a day with substantially lower mortality risk compared with very low step counts.
Is a step the same as a stride?
In fitness trackers, a step is one foot moving forward. Walking “stride length” here means the length of one step.
